He has been married to a Chinese woman for 22 years and he says he loves her tons and the relationship is very strong. The problem is his kid, who is a teenager. He says they barely talk at all, and his son is a completely awkward trev-type nerd with no friends who has never touched a girl. Neither White nor Asian girls want anything to do with him. He is a boring, personality-less manlet who has no real interests or passions (outside of video games) and is only a mediocre student. Every time he tries to initiate a conversation with his kid, the kid just answers in one-word
monosyllables and won’t meet his eyes. He’s been in councelling for social anxiety and ADD and has been perscribed various psychotropic meds but neither of his parents are really happy about that, so mostly the kid doesn’t take them. Whenever my friend tries to do father-son bonding stuff, the kid tries to get away as soon as possible or just spends time fiddling around with his phone.I told him this sounded pretty normal for adolescents and that he’d grow out of it eventually. My friend was quiet for a long time. Then he turned to me with this agonized, shame-faced look and blurted, “I thought so too, and if I wasn’t shitfaced, I wouldn’t EVER say this, but I think it’s because he’s half-Asian. I love my son to death and I’d do anything for him, but if I had to do it over I would either not have had a kid, or had a white kid. I feel fucking awful for saying this, but sometimes I look at him and it’s more like looking at an alien than at a son. It was different when he was a baby, but now…”
